Walk into almost any car wash and ask the operator what they’re spending on chemicals each month, and chances are they’ll know the number. Ask them exactly how much chemistry is being applied to each vehicle, however, and the answer is often far less certain.

That uncertainty can be surprisingly expensive.

Chemical dilution is one of the least glamorous topics in the car wash industry, yet it has one of the greatest impacts on wash quality, operating costs, customer satisfaction, and profitability. While operators often spend countless hours evaluating new products, adjusting equipment, or searching for better cleaning performance, many overlook the simple question that should come first:

Are the chemicals actually being applied as intended?

The reality is that even the best chemistry on the market cannot perform properly if it isn’t delivered at the correct concentration. Likewise, an average product can become unnecessarily expensive if it is consistently overapplied. In both situations, operators often blame the chemistry when the real problem lies in how it is being delivered.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the industry is that adding more chemical automatically produces a cleaner vehicle. It seems logical – if a little works, more should work even better.

Unfortunately, chemistry doesn’t work that way.

Every professional car wash product is engineered to perform within a specific application range. Below that range, cleaning begins to suffer. Above that range, operators usually spend more money without seeing a meaningful improvement in results. In many cases, excessive chemistry can actually create new problems by making products more difficult to rinse, leaving additional residue behind, or reducing the effectiveness of downstream applications like sealants and drying agents.

On the other side of the equation are operators trying to reduce costs by cutting chemical usage. While reducing dilution settings might lower the monthly chemical bill, it often creates a much larger expense through poorer cleaning, additional rewashes, customer complaints, and lost memberships. Saving a penny per vehicle means very little if customers no longer believe your wash delivers value.

The goal should never be to use the least amount of chemistry possible. The goal is to use exactly the amount required to achieve the desired result – no more and no less.

One of the challenges is that dilution rarely stays constant.

  • Pumps wear.
  • Injectors slowly change output.
  • Metering tips can clog (not always due to chemistry).
  • Water pressure fluctuates.
  • Temperature changes throughout the seasons.

Even small variations can significantly affect how much product ultimately reaches the vehicle.

Many operators assume their equipment is applying what it was set to deliver six months or even six years ago. In reality, few ever verify it.

When wash quality starts to decline, the first instinct is often to increase chemical usage. If customers complain about drying, operators may increase the drying agent. If road film remains, they increase the presoak. If shine isn’t where they want it, they increase the protectant.

Sometimes those adjustments help.

Often, they simply increase chemical costs while masking the real issue.

Proper diagnosis begins with measurement.

Another factor that frequently goes unnoticed is water quality. Two identical car washes using the exact same products can experience dramatically different results simply because their water quality is different. Hard water, elevated iron levels, or high total dissolved solids can reduce cleaning performance, interfere with detergents, and change how products behave throughout the wash process.

In these situations, operators often conclude that the chemistry isn’t working when, in reality, the chemistry was never given the opportunity to perform as designed.

The industry has also evolved dramatically over the last decade. Many operators continue to run dilution settings established years ago using older chemical technology. Today’s advanced concentrated formulations, particularly advanced polymer chemistry, often require significantly different application strategies than traditional products. Continuing to apply modern chemistry using outdated settings can prevent operators from realizing the full benefits these newer technologies offer.

Perhaps the most overlooked measurement in the industry is cost per car.

Product price alone tells very little about the true cost of operating a wash. A premium concentrate may appear expensive until its actual application rate is measured. Conversely, an inexpensive product that requires two or three times the usage may quietly become one of the most expensive chemicals in the building.

Successful operators don’t evaluate chemistry by the cost of a drum or a case. They evaluate it by what it costs to clean one vehicle consistently while delivering the customer experience they expect.

That shift in thinking changes everything.

Rather than asking, “How much does this product cost?” they begin asking, “How efficiently does this product perform?”

The highest-performing operators in the industry share one common habit: they measure everything.

  • They verify application rates.
  • They routinely test dilution.
  • They monitor cost per car.
  • They evaluate equipment performance.

Most importantly, they make decisions based on data instead of assumptions.

As chemistry continues to become more advanced and concentrated, precision becomes even more important. Modern polymer technology, highly concentrated formulations, and sophisticated application systems provide tremendous opportunities to lower operating costs while improving wash quality—but only when they are applied correctly.

Chemical dilution isn’t simply another maintenance item. It is one of the foundations of a successful wash.

When chemistry is properly measured, properly applied, and routinely verified, everything else in the wash begins to perform better.
